Kiss of Truth

Yesterday the Boston police arrested a “seemingly normal, ideal guy” who was a Boston University medical student, calling him a predator: the Craigslist stalker. Philip Markoff, a young man not even 30 years old, has been charged with identifying women on Craigslist who advertised massage services, going to their hotel room, binding them, and robbing them. One of these victims was murdered, and Philip Markoff has now been formally charged with that crime too! By all accounts of friends and associates, the news of Markoff’s arrest came as a huge, totally surprising event.

I have been “unemployed” (hey, I still work very hard!) for months and so our family faces the holidays with absolutely no funds. Many millions have recently lost a job, or remain unemployed. Many millions have faced or are facing home foreclosure. Businesses are suffering or failing. The stock market has plummeted. Our economic status is depressing at best. We all know the score. It may indeed be an unusual holiday season for millions of Americans. In spite of our hardships, with some effort we can seek to have a successful holiday season. Here are a few suggestions.

I have made a choice for prosperity, but I must consider the price tag. Global warming could end all prosperity and all choices for everyone. Although that price tag seems invisible when I wake on a sunny, beautiful Saturday morning and look out my window, I know that the eventual price tag is completely visible and real. The earth – in its own stormy and turbulent way – has shown us the imminent, lurking cost, and it demands that we all change our individual choices. I must accept responsibility for my actions and inactions, and we, collectively must do the same to save our ailing planet. Demand personal change.

Some months later, Rick returned to that site, fed a garden hose from the exhaust pipe of his car back in through the window, and committed suicide. I later learned that Rick was struggling with homosexuality issues, much to my surprise.

Perhaps survival and selfishness go hand in hand; ultimately survival is an activity of the individual. In my opinion we have come “too far”. Humans have made the earth smaller and more “comfortable”, and yet precarious, spooky, and hollow to one degree or another.

Is it too late for these less fortunate people? In my opinion, the short answer very often is yes, a more accurate answer is maybe or possibly, and the long answer is that obviously time is limited to whatever extent, which therefore demands escalated and often times riskier actions and investments. And, for those who cling to the “shortcut dream”, the windfall dream of money is possible, but not probable for most.

I am afraid. I am troubled that war is not only likely, but also imminent, unless the power structures around the planet (and the little people) use the current financial crisis as a wake-up call.
