5 Top Ways to Protect Your Job

Unemployment rates in the nation are above 7.6%! That is the highest since the early 70’s. That means that nearly eight out of every 100 people are out of work. That is an astounding number! Each and every day there are more reports of layoffs from the biggest – and seemingly most secure and solid – companies in the United States. And the number of unemployed continues to grow at an alarming pace. And like all accidents and life-changing events, it is not real until it happens to you! It is unwise to believe a layoff cannot happen to you. Be prepared by being proactive in making yourself more valuable to your employer; consider these ten ways to increase the likelihood of keeping your job:

New Years Resolutions of Truth: Your Genuine Interests

Self-honesty is the starting point of all success and abundance. One of the most assured failures I know of is dishonesty. We commonly think of New Year’s Resolutions in terms of weight loss goals, quitting smoking, a better relationship, and so on. In my opinion, you increase your chances of successful resolutions if you toss out what seems to be your obvious needs, and commit yourself (by yourself!) to an annual evaluation – a personal interest survey – and then a goal setting workshop. It is more useful to understand WHY you want changes before resolving WHAT to change. The truth and honesty of your underlying motivation – your real interest or reason why – determines the strength of a resolution and the chances of enjoying success and avoiding a failed resolution.

Greed Versus Selflessness

Only days ago there was a story that made national news (on Good Morning America) about a woman who bought a distress property (a foreclosed home) and returned it to the previous owner who is a single mother that could not afford the mortgage and lost the home. Although informal arrangements might be made for the single mom to make payments, as she is able, the overall act is one of highly commendable selflessness. Of equal interest to me is the fact that the story is worthy of national news. Yes, it is a touching, heart-warming story, but why is it so? The reason is because it is never done! It is out of the norm, highly unusual, and might even be viewed as a “foolish act” (of selflessness). Obviously the buyer of the home had the financial resources, and it made sense to her to take such action. I wish that this were not unusual and that this story would therefore not be newsworthy.

The Enemy of Consistent Action

One is tempted to claim that inactivity or lack of action is the direct enemy of consistent action; that may sound obvious. Yet lack of action or inactivity is merely a symptom of a deeper problem. When the real enemy is treated, inactivity is replaced with motivation and achievement.

The Process of Getting There

Citizens the world over – for the most part – spend so much time “doing” that there is not sufficient time built in for “enjoying” (life). I know, it is not as if there were many choices in the matter; we all must do what is necessary to survive (and perhaps prosper?). At some point, however, there must be a compromise between “building a quality life” and “enjoying a quality of life”.

Anger

I was once angry at the world for all the chaos, turmoil, hatred and crime that I observed. It was easy to remain that way for years, but I came to learn the truth about being motivated by anger.

Flexibility: The High Road

Most often when we elect the high road, we pay the price “upfront”, earning a return on the investment, whereas when we select the easy road we squander any return there might be and pay an eventual higher price. Flexibility means recognition of this reality and making the most useful and sensible choices based upon what will add balance to life.

Motivation and Education

I believe that formal education is extremely important and absolutely provides advantages, but is not the end-all-be-all of success.

Guilty By Association

This blog is about motivation and mental preparation (for success in life) within the obligatory trappings of societal reality; too much thought or analysis tends to be depressing to the soul. Recognition of true value(s) and acceptance of personal responsibility are the keys to understanding and ultimate acceptance.

Number One Component of Success!

Motivation, preparation, clear goals, research and development, consistent action, and flexibility are the essential steps to success, but all – and I do mean ALL – pieces of success in life depend on our ability to do this one task: communicate effectively!
